Start date: Wednesday, August 5 2026.
Schedule:
Wednesday, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM ,
Resource person: Audra Bullard
Description:
Learn how women really won the vote in the US. Travel back in time to when it was legal for a man to beat his wife, when a woman could be (and was) arrested for trying to vote, and when thousands of children died from contaminated milk. Then learn why women’s battle for the vote matters to you today. As we journey, we’ll talk about parts of the 70+ year suffrage story you probably never thought about – if you’ve thought about suffrage at all – the struggle for suffrage in western North Carolina, the invention of brownies, and how food played an important role in the battle for the vote. Find out how the suffrage battle came down to a vote by a single legislator in a statehouse less than a half day’s ride from where you’re sitting right now. Laura Kumin is the author of “All Stirred Up: Suffrage Cookbooks, Food, and the Battle for Women’s Right to Vote,” and “The Hamilton Cookbook: Cooking, Eating, and Entertaining in Hamilton’s World.” Kumin is now working on a third book, “With Recipe and Justice for All: A DC Voting Rights Cookbook,” modeled on the suffrage cookbooks she wrote about in “All Stirred Up.” She also runs the popular blog, “Mother Would Know.” Kumin earned a law degree from Columbia Law School and practiced law in Washington, DC for more than two decades before turning her attention to writing about food and American history.
