Description:

Class runs May 8th, 22nd, 29th and June 5th. No class on May 15th.

This coming May, Christine Joy is looking forward to teaching a new oil painting class. Oil is a lovely painting medium that is very “forgiving,” and it gives the artist lots of dry time to paint at a more relaxed pace. In this class we will be creating paintings in the style of 4 master artists - Suerat, Sorolla, Hopper and Constable.

In this 4 week class, each session will be focused on learning different approaches to oil painting. We will practice color mixing, creating texture, and experimenting with all that our paints can do. Christine will give a demonstration at the beginning of each class and then the rest of class will be painting time for the students. Christine will make sure each student gets attention and tips based on their experience.

This class will be great for first time painters as well as intermediate painters. For beginning painters, we will learn how to set up our palettes and go through some of the basics of oils. For more experienced painters who want to further explore the oil paint medium, there will be tips and tricks. Some other focuses of these classes will include: value, basic brushwork, and color theory! Here is a basic outline some things we will do in our coming class:

Week 1: Georges Suerat- Here we will learn how to set up our palettes and easels to begin our painting. Suerat painted beautiful scenery throughout his artistic career. Though he lived a short life, his vivid paintings in a pointillism style brought in the Post-Impressionist movement with a new and interesting study in color.  In this class we will be paying special attention to the way Suerat applied paint to the canvas.

Week 2: Jaoquin Sorolla - Sorolla is one of the great masters of Impressionism and brushwork. In this class Christine will be demonstrating several ways to paint in his style and create color harmonies and soft edges with our brushwork.

Week 3: Edward Hopper - Hopper is one of art history’s favorite American realist painters, known for his crisp realism, narrative, and austere scenes. In this class Christine will demonstrate how we can use this technique in our paintings.

Week 4: John Constable - For our last class we will be looking into the works of John Constable. He is one of the first artists in the Romantic era to paint the countryside as he saw it - without over idealizing it. There is more of an element of detail to this style of painting so for this class we will need a tinier paint brush!

Though oils can be a daunting medium at first, there are many strategies we will work on together to make the process not only easier but also more enjoyable! Once the students have their oil painting kits made they will be able to use it for a long time to come.

Christine is looking forward to painting with you!
