Join us for a two week workshop led by our November Ceramics Resident Fiona Shaughnessy

This workshop will run over two Sundays: November 16th & November 23rd, 9:00am-1:00pm 

Participants are invited to learn about terra sigillata, a surface treatment originally used by ancient Greeks and Romans in lieu of glaze that creates a luminous, skin-like finish. Fiona Shaughnessy will guide participants through the process in two sessions to demonstrate the diverse applications of this technique, and to allow the terra sigillata to mature over the course of the intervening week. All Workshop Materials will be provided.

Week 1: Sunday, Nov. 16th 9:00am-1:00pm

  • Introduction to the history of terra sigillata and examples of contemporary use
  • Demo of the mixing process
  • Participants mix their own 
  • Time to make work!

Week 2: Sunday, Nov. 23rd 9:00am-1:00pm

  • Short presentation with a couple more examples of contemporary use + test tile examples
  • Separating the terra sigillata (demo + guidance)
  • Applying terra sig to work (demo + advice, work time)
