Description:

On this afternoon, Christine will be facilitating an art critique time for all art mediums - including watercolor, oil, gouache, drawing, block printing, and any other 2D medium. "Critique" can sound like a scary word, but when done well a critique group is an excellent way to learn and improve our own work, as well as improve our ability to interact with and appreciate art.

The group will use these guidelines for our critique time:

-What stands out about the piece? (basic observations, feelings, overall mood of the piece)

-What do I like? Specifically, what parts are working well in the piece? (The student can use this information to repeat successful strategies in future paintings.)

-What parts could use some work or adjustments (In a good critique saying something like "I don't like this or that" doesn't help the person trying to learn, but rather we search for areas that we could give ideas on how to improve the piece - it's composition, brushwork, color theory, etc.)

To begin, we will critique one of Christine's paintings to get warmed up, and then we will go through one student's work at a time. Students can bring 1 or 2 pieces of art to be looked at.

This is key - as the artist in a critique group, the goal isn't to go home and then redo the piece, but rather it is to use the learned knowledge for future works. The feedback learned from our paintings is meant to give us forward momentum, and move into the next work of art with confidence and curiosity.

Christine invites you to join our critique group! She will provide some cookies, and students are welcome to bring along snacks as well!
