Description:

In this 4 week class we will explore watercolor painting with mixed media and texture. Each day Christine will begin class with a demonstration and lesson, and then the remainder of the class will be for our painting project of the day. Christine will introduce how to use gouache and watercolor together. While this method can be challenging for many artists, there are some very important and helpful techniques we will be discussing to help make a successful painting. This is a fun medium where we will explore color theory, brushwork and more. Someone who has never touched paint before will be able to take this class and learn the basics of watercolors, and the experienced artist will work on the refining of their watercolor skills.

Brief layout of our 4 weeks together:

Week 1: Experimenting with Materials - Here we will learn how to set up our paint palette and familiarize ourselves with our paper and brushes and other texture making tools. We will do some basic experimenting with various elements (gouache, salt, scratching, dry-brush etc.) and how it affects our watercolor paintings. We will create a small simple completed painting on this day.

Week 2: Seeing Texture In A Landscape - In this part of the class we will be exploring further what odd materials (explained in class) can do to create interesting textures in our paintings. Here we will be applying these techniques in the context of a rural landscape. Christine will talk about some of the key elements in a landscape painting (composition, color theory etc.), and how to layer our paints strategically with the use of gouache.

Week 3: Starting A Larger Painting: This week we will begin a larger painting that we will work with both this week and next week. Painting on a larger scale gives us more room to experiment with texture. This week we will start with our first layer of paint.

Week 4: Working On/Finishing Last Week's Painting - In this final class of the series we will be continuing on last week's landscapes, and focusing on creating depth in our painting. As a bonus topic, this day Christine will demonstrate some ways to work out "mistakes" in our paintings.

Watercolor is a medium many people are intimidated by, but I have some simple tricks that will make painting with watercolors a great experience. If you have never painted with watercolors before, this class will be a great starting place. I will make sure this class is approachable for the absolute beginner and offer additional tips and tricks for a more experienced artist. I am excited to paint with you!
