Cat Card Level 3B & 3A is designed for sailors looking to move beyond short-term training and commit to long-term development. This program focuses on progressive skill-building, teamwork, and independent decision-making, setting the foundation for advanced sailing and potential competition.
Program Breakdown:
Level 3B (Afterschool Program – Spring, Summer, Fall) – The first step in long-term sailing development, focusing on team dynamics, leadership, and athlete progression.
Level 3A (Afterschool Program – Spring, Summer, Fall) – A more advanced level within the program, focusing on competition preparation, self-reliance, and refining tactical sailing skills.
What You’ll Learn:
Independent & Team Sailing Skills – Learn to confidently sail without instructor intervention, refining boat handling, sail trim, and strategic decision-making.
Intermediate Boat Control & Seamanship – Develop a deeper understanding of boat balance, weight placement, and sail efficiency for optimal performance.
Wind, Current & Weather Theory – Gain extensive knowledge of how environmental factors affect sailing and apply that understanding to real-time decision-making.
Race & Competition Introduction – Understand fundamental racing tactics, start-line positioning, buoy rounding, and teamwork in a competitive setting.
Leadership & Team Communication – Improve coordination with teammates, develop leadership skills, and learn how to take on responsibility in a team environment.
Coach-Athlete Relationships – Build confidence in receiving and applying coaching feedback, developing personal growth and resilience in a learning environment.
Safety & Emergency Response – Learn and demonstrate advanced safety awareness, rescue drills, and self-reliance on the water.

Students should be able to:
Demonstrate all basic sailing skills to successfully complete a day of training with the aide of one or more sailing partners.
Show a basic knowledge of wind and weather conditions, waves, current, and tides, and how to successfully navigate using this information.
At all times, display an appropriate level of safety awareness.
Complete the required skill set checklist.
Build and demonstrate knowledge, terminology, and awareness to effectively express and communicate their experiences on and off the water.
Level 3A Graduation Requirements:
Students must be able to:
Show a high level of competency in all intermediate to advanced boat handling skills, maneuvers, and drills.
Demonstrate extensive knowledge of waves, wind, and current, along with a basic understanding of local weather patterns.
Complete any sailing session unassisted.
Perform all safety requirements and exhibit in-depth knowledge of safety procedures.
Display a level of confidence and leadership reflecting the dedication and knowledge expected of a sailor.
Show confidence in team communication and coach communication.
Complete the required skill set checklist.
Sailors graduating from Level 3A should be fully prepared for Cat Card Level 4, where they will continue to refine their skills in either Freeride or Competition Sailing.

This program follows The Compass Way, a philosophy of long-term athlete development that builds resilience, teamwork, and leadership alongside technical sailing ability. Level 3B & 3A serve as the bridge between intermediate sailing and high-performance sailing in Cat Card Level 4, 5 and 6.
