Jared Maclean was more than a coach — he was a leader, a mentor, and a beloved member of the Edmonton tennis family. Born and raised in Port Moody, B.C., Jared was a gifted athlete who represented his province at national championships and served as captain of the University of Alberta Golden Bears Tennis Team, leading them to two Canadian National titles — the most recent in August 2024.
In summer 2023, Jared joined the Edmonton Junior Tennis Society (now Edmonton Tennis Community) as Program Coordinator and Lead Coach. He championed TENNISfest 2023, led our school outreach initiative, and mentored many of our junior coaches. His leadership shaped programs and people alike.
Off the court, Jared was a passionate educator, a devoted son to Deb and Dave, a loving brother, and a proud fiancé to Madison.
Jared made people feel seen, supported, and believed in — whether you were a young athlete picking up a racquet for the first time or a colleague stepping into your first coaching role. He brought fire and joy to everything he did, earning the nickname “Diego” for his resemblance to professional Tennis player, Diego Schwartzman – wearing it with pride.
His energy was magnetic. His belief in others was unwavering. His laughter and loyalty left a mark on everyone lucky enough to know him.
In November 2024, Jared died by suicide. His passing has left a hole in our community that can never be filled — but also a responsibility: to talk more openly about mental health in sport, to check in on each other, and to build the kind of support systems that help people feel less alone.
To honour Jared’s legacy, the Edmonton Tennis Community created this initiative to fund mental health-focused resources and outreach within our community — because no athlete, coach, or teacher should have to struggle in silence.
