With a phone and a TikTok account, everyone can be a filmmaker these days. But not everyone has the chance to learn from the pros. This summer, the University of Virginia and Light House Studio are teaming up to offer an incredible and FREE weeklong
workshop for high school students.

Students in the program will have the chance to weigh in on one of the defining aspects of teen’s lives -- social media. Teens are constantly inventing amazing new ways to build communities or express themselves online. They can also be subjected to toxic and inaccurate content.

So, what should be done? Parents, educators, and policy makers all seem to have ideas about how social media impacts young people and whether access to social media should be limited. But, in this workshop, we want to hear from the real expert: YOU!

To really make your voice heard, the final film will premiere at the UVA Youth-Nex conference in October 2024, which is attended by 100 researchers, educators, counselors and others who are working on youth development, education, and mental health.

Over the course of five days, teens will work in small groups to write, film, and edit short documentary films about their views on the impact of social media and whether it should be regulated. In the process, they’ll interview other teens to hear their perspectives and
work with film professionals to learn how to make a documentary from start to finish.

What do you want the world to know? Use this workshop to bring important issues to light, make a passionate argument for something you believe in, and educate your community! Check out examples of what students have created in Light House documentary workshops below!
