This internationally bestselling novel from one of Israel's greatest contemporary writers is a haunting meditation on the costs of war and the consequences of living in a society where the burden of war falls on each generation anew.

Ora is a 49-year-old Israeli mother, and her younger son, Ofer, has just finished his compulsory military service. Unexpectedly, on his last day, he volunteers for an extra month to take part in a significant military operation. Ora, certain Ofer will die, has a mystical belief that if she is not home when the soldiers come to inform her of her son's death, he will not die. And so she embarks on hiking the same trail she and Ofer had planned on doing together - from the north of Israel - the 'end of the land' - back to her home in Jerusalem. Ora convinces a former friend, Avram, to travel with her. As they sleep in the hills, Ora begins to conjure her son, a telling that she hopes will keep her son alive.

Set in Israel in a series of overlapping circles in time, including during the 1967 Yom Kippur war, 1973, and up to 2011, this epic yet intimate novel places side by side the trials of war and the challenges of everyday life.
