Annual Beverley Fingerhut Memorial Lecture William Kurelek: Jewish Life in Canada Guest speaker: Sarah Milroy, Chief Curator at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection In 1975, revered Ukrainian-Canadian painter William Kurelek created a suite of 16 jewel-toned paintings titled Jewish Life in Canada, as an homage to the immigrant experience, his Jewish art dealer and friend Avrom Isaacs, and as a gesture across the cultural divide. Kurelek’s works - featuring Prairie farm colonies, businesses and schools in Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg, and celebrations of festivals and community events - foregrounded the role of tradition, community, and family at the core of the Jewish experience in mid-twentieth century Canada. Generously sponsored by the Fingerhut/Metcalfe family. Join us in-person – including afternoon tea - on Zoom simulcast, or register to receive the recording. Thursday April 30 For registration assistance, please call 416-924-6211 x0 or email help@mnjcc.org. Sarah Milroy is the Frances and Tim Price Executive Director and Chief Curator of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinberg, Ontario, Canada’s only museum devoted exclusively to Canadian and Indigenous art. Previously, Sarah served as editor and publisher of Canadian Art magazine and as lead art critic of the Globe and Mail. In 2020, Sarah was made a Member of the Order of Canada. Her major touring exhibitions include From the Forest to the Sea: Emily Carr in British Columbia (2010), David Milne: Modern Painting (2018), Early Days: Indigenous Art from the McMichael (2020) and Uninvited; Canadian Women Artists in the Modern Moment (2021) – Sarah presented an illustrated lecture about Uninvited to our community in April 2023, and we are delighted to welcome her back to the Miles Nadal JCC this spring! Beverley Fingerhut was one of the very first female IT executives in Canada, becoming Vice-President at CGI Canada. Later, she became National Program Director at the Centre of Excellence in Business Analysis at the Schulich School of Business at York University. A lifelong learner and hearty appreciator of culture, her love of visual art inspired her to volunteer as a docent at the AGO. A devoted Miles Nadal JCC community member and lay leader, Beverley generously volunteered her time for six years to lovingly curate and lead the Miles Nadal JCC Book Club. In December 2019, UJA Federation honoured Beverley with a Community Volunteer Award, in recognition of her years of devotion to our community. Beverley passed away in April 2021, and to commemorate Beverley’s lasting legacy, the Annual Beverley Fingerhut Memorial Lecture was created, to celebrate strong, creative and influential women in the visual arts and/or literary worlds. She touched and transformed the lives of so many in our JCC community, and she is dearly missed. Honour to her memory!
