Description:

As John Donne once said, “No man is an island” and there are moments in history when the meeting of two exceptional minds can change the world forever.

After wowing Toronto audiences with her delightful lectures on “Power Couples” in history, Dr. Laura Carlson, an Oxford-trained historian, returns with this brand new series, exploring how history’s most iconic friends, lovers and rivals became inextricably linked, transforming the worlds of politics, arts, science and popular culture.

From the love affairs that built—and shook—the British Crown to the fierce and intimate friendship that gave the world The Beatles to the acrimonious rivalries that spurred inventors and writers to produce their greatest work, we’ll explore the intense relationships, and extraordinary achievements, of these inseparable duos, revealing the mark they left on each other and the world.

This series is led by Dr. Laura Carlson, who holds a doctorate in History from Oxford University and has taught history and classics at Queen’s University and Centennial College. A longtime favourite of the Speakers Annex community, Dr. Carlson has taught popular courses such as Living the Good Life: A Philosopher’s Guide to Meaning and Happiness and Power and Passion: The Couples Who Changed History.
