Description:
Not long ago, the New York Times Style Magazine convened an illustrious panel of photographers, critics and museum curators to come up with a list of the 25 Photos That Defined the Modern Age. Inspired by this fun—and hotly debated!—feature, this new lecture series, led by Jordan Bear, an accomplished art historian at the University of Toronto, will assess some of the most impactful photos in history, exploring both the unique circumstance of their making and why these indelible photos have been seared into our memories.
As we survey brilliant work by Robert Frank, Alfred Stieglitz, Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Diane Arbus—and stunning images by lesser-known talents that have left a mark on the world—these eye-catching, slide-illustrated lectures will consider the unique alchemy of talent, timing, artistry and news value that allows a photograph to imprint our collective memory, shaping both the evolution of the art form and the way that we remember major figures and events.
This series is led by Dr. Jordan Bear, a professor of Art History at the University of Toronto. A distinguished scholar specializing in the study of photography and European Art, Dr. Bear’s courses are consistently rated by his students as among the best—and the most “inspiring”—they’ve taken at U of T.
