Annual Beverley Fingerhut Memorial Lecture – Ya'ara Eshet

Discover the creativity, imagination and feminine power of artist and illustrator Yaara Eshet. Her provocative works – featured several times at the Miles Nadal JCC Gallery – are inspired by her secular kibbutz upbringing near the Sea of Galilee, and a rich Judaic history including folklore, mysticism, Kabbalah, Israeli poetry and Yiddish verses. Generously sponsored by the Fingerhut/Metcalfe family. Join us in-person at the Miles Nadal JCC (including afternoon tea), on Zoom simulcast, or register to receive the recording!

Ya'ara Eshet was born in Israel. She studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem and has since cultivated a prolific career as an illustrator and artist both in Israel and in Canada.  She has illustrated over 30 books—for children, youth, and adults. Since 1990, Eshet has been exhibiting her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions across museums and galleries, as well as various art fairs, both in Israel and Canada… including several times at our JCC! Ya'ara has lived in Toronto since 2003 with her family and an ever-changing number of cats.

Beverley Fingerhut was one of the very first female IT executives in Canada, becoming Vice-President at CGI Canada. Later, she became National Program Director at the Centre of Excellence in Business Analysis at the Schulich School of Business at York University. A lifelong learner and hearty appreciator of culture, her love of visual art inspired her to volunteer as a docent at the AGO. A devoted Miles Nadal JCC community member and lay leader, Beverley generously volunteered her time for six years to lovingly curate and lead the Miles Nadal JCC Book Club. In December 2019, UJA Federation honoured Beverley with a Community Volunteer Award, in recognition of her years of devotion to our community. Beverley passed away in April 2021, and to commemorate Beverley’s lasting legacy, the Annual Beverley Fingerhut Memorial Lecture was created to celebrate strong, creative and influential women in the visual arts and/or literary worlds. Beverley touched and transformed the lives of so many in our JCC community, and she is dearly missed. Honour to her memory!
