Description:

Students will learn about the world of playwriting and the theatre canon through studying various plays and styles to develop their own short new works. Students will be guided through learning different structures, genres, and stylistic elements to discover what best serves them and their craft, using various writing exercises and sharing their work with their peers to sharpen their voices. By the end of the semester, students will be ready to write their own short (10-minute) plays to be presented in their own festival. No Playwriting experience required, just a creative mind.

Notes: Class will be taught by Leo Layla Díaz, bio below: Leo Layla Díaz (they/them) is a Jersey-native playwright, teaching artist, and access dramaturg, and holder of a BFA in playwriting and MA in arts management from The New School. Some of their recent plays include Gore is for Girls (Art House Productions), Orbiting Something (The 24 Hour Plays: Nationals, off-Broadway), Trophy Boys (The New School & The Tank), Roleplay (The Chain Theatre), and Croaks (The Tank). Díaz’s writing has been performed at Rebel Verses (The Vineyard Theater), The 24 Hour Plays: Viral Monologues, and Brave New Voices (Houston & Las Vegas). Díaz worked as lead producer on the inaugural The 24 Hour Plays: Hoboken. Díaz’s work focuses on identity, authenticity, LGBT youth cultures, and glitter.

Prerequisites: Class is imagined for teenagers, but if a plucky, sophisticated, and ambitious 11- or 12-year-old really wanted in, we would certainly consider them!
