Description:

In this session for grades K-3, students will participate in an Intertidal Zone Exploration where they l discover creatures like fishes and anemones, and learn how these animals survive the shifting tides. The Intertidal Zone Game will help kids understand the challenges creatures face in the different intertidal zones, such as finding food and staying safe. The Intertidal Adaptation activity highlights how different organisms have special features to thrive in this environment. Students will grasp the basic science of tides, adaptations, and the animals that call the intertidal zone home.

This program covers BC Science Curriculum including:

Big ideas:

  • Daily and seasonal changes affect all living things
  • Living things have life cycles adapted to their environment
  • Living things are diverse, can be grouped, and interact in their ecosystems 
     

Competencies:

  • Basic needs of plants and animals 
  • Adaptations of local plants and animals 
  • Living things make changes to accommodate daily and seasonal cycles
  • Structural features of living things in the local environment
  • Behavioural adaptations of animals adaptations in the local environment
  • Local patterns that occur on Earth and in the sky
  • Identify simple patterns and conncetions
