Description:

In this program for grades 4-7, students will learn about astronomy as part of the opening session of our spring program. They will explore how the movement of celestial bodies shapes the seasons, tides, and the natural changes that come with spring. Through interactive activities, students will model the Earth-Moon-Sun system to understand orbits, phases of the Moon, and the gravitational forces behind tides. They also will learn about the cultural significance of the Sun and Moon through Indigenous stories like Raven stealing the Sun, and compare ancient and modern methods of tracking time. Hands-on projects such as moon phase sliders, tide tracking, and sundial creation will help students connect scientific concepts with real-world observations, showing how celestial movements influence life on Earth.

• The motions of Earth and the moon cause observable patterns that affect living and non-living systems 
• How do seasons and tides affect living and non-living things
• The solar system is part of the Milky Way, which is one of billions of galaxies.
