Description:

This session for grades 4-7 offers students an in-depth look at the dynamic world of intertidal zones. Through the Intertidal Zone Exploration, students will identify and analyze various organisms like fishes, anemones, and algae, learning how they adapt to the changing tides. The Intertidal Zone Game introduces ecological concepts like resource competition and predator-prey relationships. In the Intertidal Adaptation activity, students will investigate specific survival strategies, such as the ability to cling to rocks or adjust to different water temperatures. The program emphasizes the science of tidal zones, adaptation, and the delicate balance of life in this unique environment.

This program covers BC Science Curriculum including:

Big ideas:

  • All living things sense and respond to their environment
  • How do seasons and tides affect living and non-living things
  • Multicellular organisms have organ systems that enable them to survive and interact within their environment.

  • Evolution by natural selection provides an explanation for the diversity and survival of living things.

Competencies:

  • Sensing and responding: animals and plants
  • Demonstrate curiosity about the natural world
  • Biomes as large regions with similar environmental features
  • organisms have evolved over time
  • survival needs
  • natural selection
  • Make observations aimed at identifying their own questions about the natural world
