Developed by Canada’s National Ballet School (NBS) in collaboration with Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, the NBS Adaptive Dance Program (ADP) offers joyful, sensory-friendly, and fully inclusive dance experiences for children ages 3+ with diverse developmental, sensory, and physical needs. Designed for those who may find traditional recreational dance programs inaccessible, ADP prioritizes individual expression, meeting each child where they are to nurture confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging through movement. At the heart of this program is a deep commitment to celebrating the unique identities and abilities of children with disabilities (CWD). Rather than focusing on diagnoses, ADP fosters an environment where every child’s strengths and self-expression are honoured. The NBS Adaptive Dance Program Pilot was developed in consultation with Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. The program is led by a NBS Community Dance Specialist and supported by an Occupational Therapist. The classes are designed to share the physical, emotional and social benefits of dance with individual living with diverse physical, developmental and sensory needs. Classes are offered here at Canada’s National Ballet School on Sundays. Each class is 45 minutes with a 15 minute post class staff and volunteer debrief session. We ask that the whole teaching team attend these. Rooted in Creative Movement, ADP provides an engaging, non-competitive space where children can explore their physical and creative potential. Participants are encouraged to move in ways that feel natural to them, using dance as a means of communication and self-expression. We aim to create a community where our dancers feel comfortable to be themselves and connect with each other in a safe(r) space. As we are centered on celebrating the joy of dance, our dancers are welcomed to engage in the class in a way that feels right to them - we welcome and celebrate everyone’s own ways of moving and prioritize the needs of our dancers above adherence to the exact movements the dance teacher is presenting. Moreover, we believe that a child engages most fully and joyfully in class when they are emotionally regulated and as such, our dancers’ sensory needs are prioritized. As we each benefit from unique strategies and goals, each dancer will be engaging in the class in their own way.Instructions
