Description:
Prerequisite: Completion of the 4-week or 6-week Pottery course. This four-week class is designed for students who already understand the basics of wheel throwing and want to build stronger, more consistent skills at the wheel. The focus is on repetition, control, and refining technique through structured exercises. Rather than exploring many different ceramic methods, this course concentrates exclusively on wheel throwing and the techniques that build strong, functional pottery. What You'll Learn Improve centering and clay control Throw stronger cylinders with even walls Shape cups, mugs, and bowls with better consistency Pull and attach comfortable handles Trim and refine finished forms Glaze functional pottery cleanly and confidently Weekly Focus Week 1 — Cylinder Boot Camp Students refresh their core wheel skills through repetition. Multiple cylinders are thrown in succession to re-establish strong habits in centering, opening, and pulling walls. Students then practice throwing 1-pound cylinders using only 3–5 pulls to build efficiency and control. Week 2 — Cups, Mugs & Handles Students throw cup and mug forms while refining cylinder shape, rim compression, and wall thickness. The class also focuses on pulling and attaching comfortable, well-proportioned handles. Week 3 — Bowl Forms, Consistency & Trimming Students learn to transform cylinders into bowl shapes, focusing on opening the form correctly and developing smooth curves while maintaining a strong base. Students also practice throwing multiple forms with consistent size and proportions, then trim and refine previously thrown work, focusing on foot rings, curves, and balance. Week 4 — Glazing & Finishing Students glaze their finished pottery while reviewing the techniques learned throughout the course. The final session emphasizes clean glazing, functional finishes, and celebrating progress in consistency and control at the wheel. Your tuition includes: 12 lbs. of B-Mix clay Use of studio tools (you’re welcome to bring your own) Studio glazes Kiln firing for your finished pieces Class Fee: $180 Materials Fee: $60Intermediate Wheel Throwing: Building Strong Fundamentals
