This presentation will ‘paint a picture’ of the how geology has impacted and continues to impact the lives of nearly 3 million people who live in the Metro Vancouver area.

The landscape and geology of Metro Vancouver are the result of more than 100 million years of Earth history. In this presentation, Prof. Clague will outline the geologic framework of the region and discuss how it came to be.

He will then discuss why Vancouver was settled in the late1800s, how it became Canada’s second largest city, and how our geology and landscape drove past political and administrative decisions that were not forward-looking and, as a result, ‘locked’ us in to some of the major issues we face today (e.g., earthquakes, floods, road and rail access, traffic, water supply).

About the speaker:

John Clague obtained his PhD at the University of British Columbia in 1973. He was employed as a research scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada from 1975 until 1998, and as a professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University from 1998 until 2016. Clague is a geologist with research specializations in glacial geology, natural hazards, and climate change. He received an honorary PhD from the University of Waterloo in 2017, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and an Officer of the Order of Canada.
