In this presentation, SFU Professor Emeritus  will ‘paint a picture’ of the how geology has impacted and continues to impact the lives of nearly 3 million people who live in the Metro Vancouver area.

The landscape and geology of Metro Vancouver are the result of more than 100 million years of Earth history. Prof. Clague will begin by outlining the geologic framework of the region and discuss how it came to be.

He will then examine why Vancouver was settled in the late1800s, how it became Canada’s second largest city, and how our geology and landscape drove past political and administrative decisions that were not forward-looking and, as a result, ‘locked’ us in to some of the major issues we face today (e.g., earthquakes, floods, road and rail access, traffic, water supply).
