Description:

Have you ever wanted to learn how to write engaging, exciting, and interesting characters? Have you ever wanted to bring those characters to life through dialogue and action? Did you make a New Years resolution to turn that idea of yours into a story?

Here’s your chance! Whether you are a veteran writer or enthusiastic beginner, this three-week class will teach you all you need to know to start writing your own standout characters.

In this course, participants will take part in activities, discussions, and brief lectures to create short fiction pieces used to practice and explore the art of character creation.

Some activities include:

  • Designing a Tree of Traits, a graph to explore your character’s past, fears, hopes, and personality
  • Writing half a scene only with dialogue. A partner will complete the scene.
  • Creating dynamic, engaging characters to be used in a class-wide character potluck
  • Designing relationship charts to explore interpersonal dynamics

Come ready to share your thoughts and your writing. Whether veteran or newcomer, you will find a community of fellow writers ready and able to help your writing become its very best.

This class is for everyone 16+ who wants to learn to write effective characters, dialogue, and action. Students must bring something to write with to each class. Laptops, tablets, and pencil-paper are all fine— whichever you’re most comfortable with.
