Description :

Religion is not just about personal transformation, but also about living in community with one another. Morality is an aspect of every religion, yet too often moral rules written thousands of years ago are applied as literal gospel in radically different societies today. Furthermore, how can ancient scriptures that also endorse slavery, the subjugation of women, the outcasting of gays, and the stoning of unruly children actually have wisdom that we can apply today? For many atheists, the literal commandments in these scriptures on their face invalidate them as authorities on ethics. However, billions of people across the globe turn to their faiths as their primary guide on how to live their lives. One might also question, do science and modern societies do any better? Science has produced destructive tools never imagined by the authors of our holy books from gunpowder to nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons that have killed millions of people to date and could potentially be used to destroy our very planet. How do we reconcile these conflicting and confusing philosophies in a way that authentically moves us toward the goals of love and respect for each other and peace in our communities?
