Freedom of Information (FOI) Laws, a byproduct of post-Watergate reform, have produced some of the biggest stories in modern journalism, have fueled citizen activists and have helped historians better chronicle our nation’s history. Some of the many government and industry scandals and controversies revealed in whole or in part by FOI requests include the FBI’s surveillance of Martin Luther King and other civil rights leaders, the use of torture at Abu Ghraib Prison, the CIA’s “Black Sites” and torture program, and the Boeing 737 Max safety oversight failures. How do FOI laws work? And what threats have emerged to them?

Charles N. Davis has served as Dean of the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia since 2013. He taught at Missouri, Georgia Southern, and SMU, is a former journalist, has won several teaching awards, and led the National Freedom of Information Coalition. His scholarship focuses on government transparency, public records and meeting laws, and the role of a free press in a democracy.

Programs that include food, beverage or art materials must be canceled within three (3) weeks prior in order to receive a refund. CLE reserves the right to cancel a program if the minimum enrollment has not been met or for circumstances beyond our control, and participants will be notified, a complete refund will be issued. All classes are held in the CLE Lecture Hall at the Peggy Crosby Center unless otherwise noted. In the event information has changed from the published brochure, it will be posted on our website and in our e-blasts. Addresses for “private home” venues will be provided to registrants within 2 days of the program date.
