Description :

Ken Burns’s six-part, twelve-hour limited series, “The American Revolution,” is likely to shape perspectives on the founding of the United States for years to come. What does Burns get right and wrong about the revolution? University of South Carolina Professor Woody Holton was not part of the Burns film but was interviewed for competing Revolution films airing on Hulu, PBS, and Netflix. He will play clips from Burns’s “The American Revolution,” offer brief commentary on each, then open the floor for discussion. Participants will come away with a better understanding not only of “The American Revolution” and the American Revolution but also of what is momentous and what is trivial in creating public memories, of the power and perils of mythmaking, and of how twenty-first-century Americans have changed their ideas—not only about the details of the nation’s founding but about the purposes of historical memory.

Woody Holton is the Peter and Bonnie McCausland Professor of History at the University of South Carolina, where he teaches and researches Early American history, especially the American Revolution, with a focus on economic history and on African Americans, Native Americans, and women. He is the author of several previous books, including “Abigail Adams,” which was awarded the Bancroft Prize; his second book, “Unruly Americans and the Origins of the Constitution,” was a finalist for the National Book Award.
