Description :
Throughout human history, man’s relationship with nature has centered on two questions: “How can this benefit me?” and “How can I control it?” Modern agriculture reflects this mindset, including beekeeping. Humans have harvested wild honey for at least 10,000 years (as shown in Spanish cave paintings), and Egyptians managed bees in hives around 3,500 years ago. With the development of the Langstroth hive in the 18th century, apiarists could study and influence bee behavior to improve honey yield and timing—effectively making bees livestock. Beekeeping has revealed that bees maintain a predetermined hive hierarchy, perform age-based roles, communicate distance and direction via the “waggle dance,” navigate by the Jeremy Zimmerman is a backyard beekeeper with four hives. He has been keeping bees in Franklin for four seasons. Prior to this, he spent six years attending bee schools in Central Texas. Jeremy is currently the president of the Macon County Beekeepers Association. He also enjoys volunteering with 4H beekeepers.
sun, anticipate seasonal changes, increase genetic diversity through virgin queen mating, use pheromones to signal hive health, danger, queen status, and swarming, participate in democratic selection, and act altruistically, dying to defend the hive. With behavior so integrated that it resembles an 80,000-neuron brain, apiarists refer to the hive as a “colony.” Join Jeremey Zimmer, president of the Macon County Beekeepers, for this buzzworthy presentation all about bees. Explore what it takes to be an apiarist, and learn about our food system’s reliance on pollinators, bee products beyond honey that drive a multi-billion dollar industry, and how horticulture can support pollinators. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of bees and how to support them and their keepers.
