Cash’s voice rose, like the man himself, tall and somber out of the Mississippi
Delta with what people worldwide would come to regard as the seductive, undefinable sound of American authenticity. This talk will consider how this pop existential loner was really a product of several key collaborations and partnerships that offered pivotal support and guidance that often saved him from his worst impulses. Without the New Deal, the Cashes were another sharecropper family adrift in rural poverty. Without Sun Studio producer Sam Phillips, Cash was just another Delta gospel singer. Without Bob Dylan, he was an artist trapped in the confines of formula. Without June Carter, he was another star in the grips of addiction. Without producer Rick Rubin, he was another plodding country has-been. These “redemptions” make Cash a quintessentially American figure: supported by a variety of people and institutions, he passed as a great individualist.
