Description :
For several years, newspaper and magazine articles have asked whether we’ve seen the end of antibiotics. We can say now that the answer is a definitive yes. We’re in the post-antibiotic era. There are patients for whom we have no therapy, even those who could have been treated successfully five years ago. Antibiotic resistance arises when bacteria in hospitals learn to survive the drugs designed to kill them. Each year about 1 in 25 hospital patients acquires an infection caused by hardy “super-bugs” like MRSA or resistant pneumonia. This talk will describe the mechanism by which antibiotic resistance occurs, the need and prospects for the development of new techniques and strategies to combat resistance, and the role pharmaceutical companies and government can and should play to address this urgent public health problem. Scott K. Fridkin, MD is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and Epidemiology and at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health. Dr. Fridkin received his medical degree from Loyola University and is an infectious disease physician. He trained at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer and worked at CDC for 25 years in hospital infection prevention, outbreak response, and tracking of antibiotic-resistant infections. Since 2018 at Emory University as Director of Antibiotic Stewardship Research, Fridkin has worked to improve antibiotic use through novel techniques and collaborations involving public health academic partnerships and regional partners.
