This talk explores how the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea and the Pope’s visit to Turkey together highlight the intersection of interdenominational Christian politics and contemporary geostrategy. It argues that Turkey—home to Nicaea’s legacy and the Ecumenical Patriarchate—now sits at a strategic crossroads where Christian diplomacy, regional power politics, and great-power rivalry converge. The Pope’s visit underscores Turkey’s unique position as both a custodian of Christian heritage and a NATO state navigating between Western interests and continued cooperation with Russia during the war in Ukraine. These dynamics shape the competing
influence of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Russian Orthodox Church, whose ecclesiastical disputes increasingly map onto US–Russia geopolitical competition. As Ankara maneuvers between these actors, church diplomacy becomes intertwined with Turkey’s broader efforts to assert itself as an
indispensable regional power. Ultimately, the talk shows how Christian interdenominational politics, global strategy, and Turkey’s geopolitical ambitions are becoming ever more tightly interconnected.
