Life Enrichment Opportunities through Education, Art and More!
Date de début : mercredi, 12 août 2026.
Horaire :
Le mercredi, 10 h 00 - 12 h 00 ,
Responsable : Audra Bullard
Description :
Music has long served as a potent medium for political expression, mobilization, and resistance. This lecture explores how music and power are intertwined. Music “as an instrument to attain other goals” is the primary subject. We focus on two “instrumental” political actors: 1) people using music to secure power and 2) people using music to solidify and expand power. Both political theory and music theory are foundations for our exploration. Case materials include: popular music in the U.S. Civil War era; Wagner and National Socialism; John Williams and the Imperial March; Oscar Peterson and Hymn to Freedom; Bob Dylan and Blowin’ in the Wind; popular music in U.S. political campaigns; and AI, music, and politics in the future. Matthew Auer is the Dean of the School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Georgia. He oversees three academic departments, four research centers, and more than 2,000 students who are studying political science, international affairs, and public administration and policy. Prior to his appointment at UGA, Auer served as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Prior to Bates, Auer was Dean of the Hutton Honors College at Indiana University (IU) and Professor of International Environmental Affairs at the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IU. Auer received a PhD (1996), a MS (1993) and a MPhil. (1993) in forestry and environmental studies from Yale University, a master of law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University (1990), and an AB in anthropology from Harvard University (1988).
