Sketchbooks have long been an essential companion of artists, naturalists,
explorers, and scholars. In this class, you will learn about the sketchbook tradition and explore ways you can deepen your experiences and capture memories. This introductory overview will include historical examples, as well as current samples. During the second part of the class, you will try your hand
at some of the time-tested techniques that will allow you to develop your own sketchbook style. No prior experience or artistic training is needed for this hands-on class. Just bring a keen eye, an inquisitive spirit, and a willingness to try something new. Basic materials will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring a photo of a favorite travel or Highlands destination, a scene from your home or yard, or an idea that’s been on your mind. If you already have a favorite sketchbook, pen, or pencil, bring it.

 

Helen Tapp, a part-time Highlands resident, retired from work that had nothing to do with drawing. Committed to fun art – not fine art – she has found trip and nature journals, and a sketchbook for daily doodling, are great ways to see better, slow down time, think more deeply, and remember more.

Notes : Cancellation Policy (Please Read) Please let us know immediately if you are unable to attend a class. There is no refund for cancellations within two (2) weeks prior to a scheduled class. Programs that include food, beverage or art materials must be canceled within three (3) weeks prior in order to receive a refund. CLE reserves the right to cancel a program if the minimum enrollment has not been met or for circumstances beyond our control, and participants will be notified, a complete refund will be issued. All classes are held in the CLE Lecture Hall at the Peggy Crosby Center unless otherwise noted. In the event information has changed from the published brochure, it will be posted on our website and in our e-blasts. Addresses for “private home” venues will be provided to registrants within 2 days of the program date.
