Description :

Around the world, democracy is under assault. And even in the United States,
the world’s oldest democracy, national politics are beset by increased polarization, populist extremism, and worrying signs of democratic decay. Commentators and even scholars sometimes place the blame for these developments on longstanding American political institutions such as the twoparty system, gerrymandering, and the electoral college. In this lecture, Ethan Hollander assesses the particular features of American democracy that distinguish it from democracies around the world. While these institutions served vital functions at the time of the American founding, they also make modern American government particularly vulnerable to the challenges of today. But do these institutions also provide a roadmap to political survival? Can it be that a centuries-old document like the U.S Constitution makes American democracy particularly resilient in the face of modern challenges?
