Life Enrichment Opportunities through Education, Art and More!
Date de début : jeudi, 6 août 2026.
Horaire :
Le jeudi, 17 h 30 - 19 h 30 ,
Responsable : Audra Bullard
Description :
Jesmyn Ward’s 2011 novel “Salvage the Bones” won the National Book Award for Fiction—an achievement Ward repeated a mere half-dozen years later with her novel “Sing, Unburied, Sing,” making her the first African-American writer, and the first woman, to win the award twice. Many critics consider “Salvage” the most important literary work yet to take up the legacy of Hurricane Katrina. We will read and discuss the novel in its entirety, with a particular focus on the social, racial, and environmental issues raised by “natural” disasters like Katrina, and on the outsized role that Mississippi writers such as Ward, and her predecessor William Faulkner, have played in our nation’s literature and culture. Location: TBD. Address and details will be emailed to registered attendees closer to the event date. Heavy hors d’oeuvres and wine will be provided. Jay Watson is Distinguished Emeritus Professor of English and Howry Emeritus Professor of Faulkner Studies at the University of Mississippi, where he taught from 1989 to 2025. He served as Visiting Fulbright Professor of American Studies at two universities in Finland in 2002-2003, and he was president of the William Faulkner Society from 2009-2012.
