The following two lectures will be delivered in a single session:

At the end of the Revolutionary War, Georgia was by far the largest of the newly formed states, bounded on the east by the Atlantic and on the west by the Mississippi River. This vast land attracted both settlers and speculators, leading to rampant corruption on the part of public officials. The result was the loss to Georgia of the land that became Alabama and Mississippi, the bankruptcy of one of the nation’s Founding Fathers, and several landmark legal decisions.

In 1915, the Daughters of the Confederacy recruited Gutzon Borglum to carve a massive Civil War memorial on Stone Mountain outside Atlanta. The plan called for up to 1,000 individual figures stretching 2,000 feet in length. Carving started in the early 1920s, but politics, funding issues, and the Ku Klux Klan resulted in Borglum’s firing, and his work dynamited off the mountain. Borglum thereafter devoted his life to carving the Mt. Rushmore memorial. The current Stone Mountain carving, a mere shadow of the original plan, was finally completed in 1972.
