Description:

Create a small tapestry weaving in this beginner-friendly class. Tapestries are woven wall hangings that can feature shapes, abstract lines, textured yarn, and curated colors. We will cover: Weaving materials, their uses, and where to find them; Basic weaving stitches, knots, and patterns; And how to get a weaving on and off a loom.

About the Instructor: Shady Kimzey, Founder & Facilitator of Bad Art Company

Shady Kimzey is an independent artist and creative entrepreneur from Raleigh with over 10 years of experience in teaching and facilitation. They work with non-profits, government agencies, and businesses such as The Carrboro ArtsCenter, Orange County Arts Commission, Artspace, and the City of Raleigh.

Shady Kimzey's classes focus on beginners exploring new skills and ideas. The goal is for participants to express themselves and explore their process of making art.

Notes: Supplies: Students bring their own supplies. The ArtsCenter has 8 lap looms that students can use; please email rpnunn@artscenterlive.org to let us know if you're bringing your own loom so that we can plan accordingly! What do you absolutely need to bring? A frame/lap loom, cotton warp thread, and yarn. Recommended: - Small lap loom/frame loom with pegs or slits - 3-4 colors of yarn ideally that are medium/bulky/super bulky/jumbo (weight 4-7) - 100% cotton warp thread - 1 metal jumbo darning/tapestry needle - 1 or 2 12 to 18 inch rulers - 1 pair of small sharp scissors (fabric scissors preferred) - 1 0.5-2 inch dowel or stick long enough to hang your weaving on - 1 fork, hair pick, or weaving comb Optional: - 1 6 inch large wooden tapestry needle - 1 12-16 inch wooden flat pick-up stick - 1-2 colors of roving
