Description:
Join Bad Art Club once per month on a Saturday afternoon for a day of artmaking! BAC is a meetup for new artists, non-artists, and those that love to create. We focus on the creative process of making art and are open to all skill levels. All supplies provided. For ages 10+. This class is provided for free to participants thanks to funding from the Orange County Arts Commission and in-kind donation of space from The ArtsCenter. In November, Sarah (she/her) will guide us in Sashiko, a traditional Japanese mending technique. We will learn about Sashiko's history and practice textile reinforcing and visible mending with one of three different patterns. We will also practice basic embroidery, stitching words onto fabric using an embroidery hoop. Participants should bring a torn, well worn, or slowly stretching piece of clothing or bag they would like to mend / reinforce using this technique. We will provide a needle, thread, patterns, and reinforcing fabrics. About the Guest Artist Sarah is a passionate and adventurous learner whose brain enjoys exploring new ways to engage her hands and head. She grew up with a sewist mother, who never gave up on clothing that could be patched or re-worked. Her exposure to sashiko came in the early 2010's when she traveled to Vietnam and saw how they reinforced and recycled clothing through embellishments - sending her down a research rabbit-hole until she snagged her brain on the brilliant simplicity and geometrics of Japanese Sashiko. About the Instructor Shady Kimzey is an independent artist and creative entrepreneur from Raleigh with over 10 years of experience in teaching and facilitation. They work with non-profits, government agencies, and businesses such as The Carrboro ArtsCenter, Orange County Arts Commission, Artspace, and the City of Raleigh. Shady Kimzey's classes focus on beginners exploring new skills and ideas. The goal is for participants to express themselves and explore their process of making art.
